Fri, Jun 6th - 12:03PM Fabric Overload at Over the Rainbow Thank you for the hundreds of condolences for losing the baby donkey foal, Percy. They truly helped the grieving process - Percy's mom is doing better - I've let her back with the herd. At first she kept crying for Percy and trying to get back in the stall....One of the most touching emails was from Mary Thomas....she wrote "Dear Laura, I grieve for your loss. It does not matter if our little companions grace our lives with hours, days, weeks, or years, our hearts miss them terribly when they leave us. The reason for this tragedy may be hidden by sorrow for some time. Perhaps his name, Perserverance, is our lesson: to try our best regardless of the outcome. Or, maybe there is no lesson. Perhaps his sweetness, even for such a short time, was a gift. Just know there are people scattered here and there who think of you and your family as those "distant relatives" we love hearing from but never get to see, and whose sorrow moves us. I'll add a little P.S. in my prayers for your family and Percy." Regards, Mary Thomas Doesn't her letter just touch your heart?! I went into Crazed Farmer Mode and raced towards him screaming and he took off (with a crow in tow pestering him - I knew I liked those crows!) The eagle was huge - his wing span was easily the same as my arm span...I lost a duck today - I thought it was to Wily Coyote - but who knows now...between the coyotes, the mysterious cougar and the eagles my poor farm animals are in daily peril! One thing I wanted to describe to you was the balance of farm land and beaches on Camano Island....There are lovely beach cottages - some people live in them full time and others use them as vacation homes along the beaches which open to the Straits of Juan de Fuca...they are rock filled (rather than sand) beaches...The eagles are a common site along the beaches along w/ gulls, ducks and other ocean themed birds... However, there is also ample farm land - dairy farms, beef farms and alpaca farms....It is time for hay harvesting and when the farmers are done with the fields they let the cut hay sit for a day or two before baling it.... As soon as they cut the hay the eagles come - it isn't uncommon to see half a dozen bald eagles standing in the fields - I assume they're picking off the field critters - but it's an amazing site to see that many magnificient birds in one field....Now, if only they'd STAY in the fields instead of on MY farm! Family News - today was Randy's 50th birthday! Hard to believe we've known each other for over 30 years and will celebrate our 28th wedding anniversary this summer! 50 sounds kind of old, and yet we don't feel old...(hey - I still have 2 more years til I hit the big 5-0!) No, I didn't have a big party - we just had a family party (Memaw did the cooking) and it was fun because Sheena, my UK friend/customer was here to celebrate as well. Speaking of Sheena, she's been having some intense "retail therapy" here in the States...with the exchange rate, how could she not go wild?...Good thing she brought a whole suitcase of gifts and tea - she's going to need that and more to fit in all her treasures she found! Tue, Jun 3rd - 7:17PM Heartbreaking Tragedy at Over the Rainbow Oh - it's with a sad and heavy heart and tears streaming down my face that I have to tell you that Percy didn't make it. This morning when I came out he did not look good - more like the first day and I knew he had crashed in the night. He was spunky and spirited yesterday running around and kicking his feet up but yesterday afternoon when Randy and I brought he and Misty into their stall he was making a kind of wheezing sound. I tried to bottle feed him to no avail and we called the vet (after consulting w/ my two friends) and we brought Percy down right away. They confirmed he had a raging case of pnemonia...they gave him plasma, an IV drip, more drugs and did some tests but by 1:30 he gave up the fight and passed away. Oh...it breaks my heart and poor Misty is bawling in her stall too. I asked the vet if it would help her grieve better to see him, but he didn't think so. I'm going to put her back w/ the herd so she can commiserate with them. I tried to explain it to her but I don't speak donkey very well.. UPS brought a whole truckload of 14 boxes - including Hungry Caterpillar, ITB Wintergrafix, tons of TT which isn't even on the site and Red Rooster/Jim Shore Noah's Ark, and Art Gallery quilts Alhambra....but right now I think I just need to cry so I'll get the site updated later....I'll pull myself together by tomorrow...maybe! It's just so sad! And now, FedEx just brought another of 8 boxes so I'm feeling a little ovewhelmed.... Here's what I had done so far (until this morning) about what's new.. He is absolutely darling and still cuddly when I pick him up. Another baby duckling hatched on Saturday and then another one this morning. I named them Cadbury and Sunny - they are too cute and are living in a cage in the dining room (Randy "loves" that!)..........We had something very scary happen on Saturday evening....first my neighbor called to say he heard some weird screaming and shrieking in the pasture..then Bebop called to say that he thought he heard a cougar....it was a sound unlike anyone has ever heard. I immediately had Mandi check on the baby donkey even though he was secure in the stall inside the barn...then we did a head count of the animals and everyone was accounted for...but after my run in with Wily Coyote that's all I need is to have cunning Cougar stalking my fur and feathered children. Maybe Wily and Cunning were having a face off! I called the Sherrif's department and they have had cougar siting on Camano...so who knows.... Fri, May 30th - 7:47AM New Look for Over the Rainbow So - one of my best and all time favorite customers from Australia, Katie, has a very talented mother, Marigold....and I asked Marigold to design a new front page for Over the Rainbow....I didn't give her any ideas (mostly because I honestly lack creative design abilities!) so when she sent me the new artwork I was so ecstatic! It was beautiful and exactly what I wanted, even though I didn't even KNOW what I wanted! OK - now before we get to FABRIC news I know most of you are wondering about the Name the Donkey contest and how the little guy is doing.... Well - it was very difficult with all the wonderful ideas....Mandi says when she has a baby she's going to have a Name the Baby contest to get ideas from all of you! Rocky was by far the most submitted name....I liked all the names, but I knew that when I heard (or read) the right one, it would jump out at me....and so when Alice Patton of New York wrote "My name for your little donkey is PERSEVERANCE (nickname Percy) for his determination to survive. He's a spunky one & I am so glad he is doing so well." I knew that Percy was a perfect name for him! He's a little woe-be-gone but definitely full of perseverance and fight. So - here's the update....he is now in the stall full time with his mom, Misty...when it warms up a bit I'll bring them to a separate pasture during the day...He will not be allowed in with his Dad, Ozzie....until he's full grown...He nurses very frequently and then takes a nap and then nurses some more. Today when Judeen, the donkey sitter from the first day, came back we were watching him together and he gave a little back kick - which was the first bit of spunk we've seen (well, other than the fact that he's still alive which took a lot of spunk!) His hind quarters are still a little stiff (had an injection of E-SE) and his legs are straightening out more and he was finally able to go to the bathroom on his own without more enemas! Poor guy has been through more human manhandling than he should've had in a lifetime, but it's paying off. Thank you for the prayers, name suggestions and comfort during this time! Fri, May 30th - 12:14AM Things are looking up at Over the Rainbow Donkey Update - Well - the little mini donkey foal is a fighter - I honestly didn't think he would make it this long and it was so sad....But last night he started to nurse on his own. Along with the life saving efforts of my friend Suz on Sunday, another friend, Deb, who is the local donkey registrar came by on Monday. Deb rigged up a corner in Misty's stall using Mac's dog gates, a heating pad and blankets for the little guy...That way Misty could reach over and nuzzle him, but not hoof at him when he is lying down. It is a perfect set up....Having a donkey in my office on a dog bed was not exactly an optimal situation! Last night after we completed alpaca shearing he began to improve and could walk to his mama and nurse. It was first time I began to feel hopeful! Deb determined that he was probably born 2 weeks premature. She could tell because his fur is as soft as a bunny and a newborn foal should have coarser hair than that. So - for now I let him be with his mom for 15 minutes an hour and then put him back in his "nest"...Last night I fed him at 11:00, 3:00 am and 5:00am....and will do the same tonight.
